In the year 1930, John Maynard Keynes predicted that, by century's end, technology would have advanced sufficiently that countries like Great Britain or the United States would have achieved a 15-hour work week. There's every reason to believe he was right. In technological terms, we are quite capable of this. And yet it didn't happen.

Thailand is the cheapest place to buy residency. For just $15,902, customers can secure residency that gives them visa-free travel to 75 destinations. The UK is the most expensive residency option; people interested in getting a residency in the UK and access to visa-free travel to 177 destinations need to spend over $2.7 million.

An American man who was killed by an isolated tribe on a remote Indian island wrote to his parents hours before his death that he wanted to “declare Jesus” to the tribespeople and told them they should “not be angry at them or at God if I get killed”.

John Allen Chau, 26, is believed to have been hit with a volley of arrows and killed on Friday shortly after making land on North Sentinel Island, part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The island, which is off-limits to visitors without permission, is home to a 30,000-year-old tribe that is known to aggressively resist outsiders.

I’ll never forget the first moment I saw Branko. It was 2009 and I was 25, working as a musical director for a circus in the UK. I’d travelled alone from Gloucestershire to the village of Gornja Grabovica in Serbia, on a mission to learn Roma-style accordion. A week or so into my two-month trip, a friend called Dusan took me to meet his cousin Branko, who he said was one of the country’s best violinists.

By the time Operation Desert Storm began in mid-January 1991, Kenneth Jarecke had decided he no longer wanted to be a combat photographer—a profession, he says, that “dominates your life.” But after Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait in August 1990, Jarecke developed a low opinion of the photojournalism coming out of Desert Shield, the pre-war operation to build up troops and equipment in the Gulf. “It was one picture after another of a sunset with camels and a tank,” he says.

Nije članak, nego podcast, ali pošto nemamo temu evo ga ovde:

"The invention of race"

https://beta.prx.org/stories/218457
transkript: https://exchange.prx.org/pieces/218457/transcripts/462776

This history special traces the development of racial, and racist, ideas, from the ancient world -- when "there was no notion of race," as historian Nell Irvin Painter puts it -- up to the founding of the United States as, fundementally, a nation of and for white people (despite the "all men are created equal" language of the Declaration of Independence). Relying on the work of Painter, National Book Award-winning historian Ibram Kendi, and a recorded workshop presentation by the Racial Equity Institute, host and reporter John Biewen tells a story that names names: The Portuguese writer who, commissioned by the slave-trading leaders of his country, literally invented blackness, and therefore whiteness, in the 1450s, according to Kendi. The enlightenment scientist who first divided humanity into five "races" and coined "caucasian." The black runaway indentured servant in 17th century Virginia whose capture, and sentencing to lifelong servitude, marked the first official sanctioning of chattel slavery, and the first time a black person was treated differently from a white person in the law, in colonial America. And Thomas Jefferson and Ralph Waldo Emerson, whose "Anglo-Saxonist" thinking gets a fresh look.

The Invention of Race is adapted from several episodes of the more in-depth 14-part series, Seeing White, on the Scene on Radio podcast: http://podcast.cdsporch.org/seeing-white/

Reader, dear reader, I have some great news for you. Tesla’s Elon Musk, definitely a visionary brain genius and not at all a manic idiot spaz and brazen fraud, has invented the future of mass transit for which we so desperately clamored: A narrow, jagged death-tunnel through which, uh, one Tesla-brand car at a time can, ah, drive ... the person who owns it, plus maybe two or three other people ... from one place to another ... at 49 miles per hour.

Maroko se dosad promovisao kao "zemlja bezbedna za turizam", ali verovatno je bilo samo pitanje vremena kada će se nešto ovakvo dogoditi.

Four suspects in the killing of a pair of Scandinavian tourists in Morocco earlier this week swore fealty to Isis while standing beneath a makeshift flag of the jihadi group in a video that surfaced online on Thursday.

The bodies of the two women, Louisa Vesterager Jespersen, 24, of Denmark, and Maren Ueland, 28, of Norway, were discovered Monday in the Atlas Mountain range near the tourist hotspot of Marrakech, Morocco’s official news agency said.

Engineer Matt Daniels has created a new interactive map to visualize the world's populations. Called 'Human Terrain', the project includes extruded block-by-block population data for cities across the world to give viewers fine-grain insight into population distribution. Daniels used data from the Global Human Settlement Layer and processed it using Google Earth Engine to create a mountainous digital landscape.

From far away, the Burj Al Babas could be confused for a diorama of miniature villas. The homes all look the same, their blue-grey steeples and Gothic fixtures calling to mind the castles in Disney films.

When the project first began in 2014, its developer, the Sarot Group, hoped the luxury aesthetic would appeal to wealthy foreign buyers. Now its homes sit empty at the base of Turkey's northwestern mountains.

Oliver Mtukudzi, one of the greatest musicians that Zimbabwe has ever given birth to, has died after battling a long illness. He passed away at the Avenues Clinic in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The beloved Mtukudzi, was referred to as 'Tuku' by his fans not only in Zimbabwe but from all over the world. His jazz-inspired sound often featuring the characteristic mbira, led to the creation of innumerable songs which highlighted just how rich and metaphorical the Shona language is.

“The guys that I interviewed, they all had the same sort of methodology when they considered suicide,” van der Merwe said. “And that is to take poison — put it in food and go back into the bushes in the area where they’d been circumcised — they just never come out of it again. That is, sort of, the most dignified way for men to exit the situation.”

A Magician Among the Spirits: The Improbable Friendship of Harry Houdini & Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Harry Houdini really wanted to believe in the spirit world like his good friend Arthur Conan Doyle devoutly did, but he too often found charlatans in his midst. Irked by their fakery, the magician began a public crusade to expose these 'spiritual magicians.'
